Sandra McKenzie Schmitt originally earned a Masters Degree in intaglio printmaking, but she soon switched to clay when, having moved to New York with her printmaker husband, it became clear that "it wasn't good for both of us to work in the same studio." She took to it immediately and, beginning with a figurative sculpture show at Gallery 10 in New York City in 1973, she's been a working artist ever since. She later earned an M.F.A. from Bradley University with an emphasis on ceramic sculpture with additional work in bronze, stone carving, and metal fabrication. Sandra's sculptures are represented in more than twenty galleries across the United States, and she travels to art shows across the country. She currently owns McKenzie River Pottery in Washington, Illinois, where she creates her own work and represents other clay artists from central Illinois and across the United States. She is also active in arts outreach, working with kids from Taft Homes, teaching them how to create their own master works.
