Galesburg Resident Elected to WTVP Board of Trustee

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Peoria, IL — WTVP 47-TV is pleased to announce the election of Mr. Salvador Garza of Galesburg to the Board of Trustees of the Illinois Valley Public Telecommunications Corporation (IVPTC)—the governing body of Central Illinois’ public television station WTVP. Mr. Garza, an economic developer for the Illinois Department of Commerce-Economic Development, will serve a three-year term as an At Large member.

Mr. Garza is a dynamic community leader involved in many area civic, educational and charitable activities and is sought out for Board membership by many organizations. "We are fortunate that Sal has chosen to honor WTVP with his time and talent, and he will serve the western side of our coverage area extremely well," said WTVP President & CEO Chet Tomczyk. "Thanks to his professional involvement with economic development in the area, he has the contacts, the information and the drive to make sure we represent the Galesburg area with WTVP’s local productions and services." Mr. Garza was nominated to the IVPTC board by Galesburg-area businessman, restaurateur and entrepreneur Jay Matson.

Born in Zaragoza, Mexico, Garza moved to Galesburg with his family when he was a child. Starting at age 7, his summers were spent as a migrant worker in the Princeville area and Wisconsin. He graduated from Galesburg Senior High at age 17 and began an eight-year stint in the United States Marine Corps. While serving in the Reserves, he started as a production worker for the Admiral Company and continued his education at Carl Sandburg College, St. Ambrose University and Hamilton Technical College in the evenings. He continued in his career through many promotions to become a Senior Engineer with the Maytag Corporation that had purchased Admiral many years since. After more than 20 years with Maytag, he chose to pursue another passion: community revitalization and economic and workforce development.

Garza received an appointment from the Governor in 2004 to lead the State of Illinois Workforce Development effort through the Opportunity Returns Economic Development initiative. He had responsibilities for all 102 Illinois counties overseeing workforce projects and staff. In 2005, he moved over to an economic development position serving the Western Illinois Region.

Garza, a naturalized citizen, is a dedicated family man and community leader. He and his wife of 22 years, Eva, have three children: Amelia, Sergio and Sofia. In addition to serving as the Fire and Police Commissioner for the City of Galesburg, the President and Co-founder of the Hispanic Latino Resource Group, Inc., a member of the Board of Directors for the National Railroad Hall of Fame, and a Chairman for a Poverty Taskforce: Team Knox County, Sal is also a certified First Responder and enjoys coaching basketball and soccer at the YMCA.

Illinois Valley Public Telecommunications Corporation (IVPTC) is the non-profit, community licensee for public television station WTVP 47. Its 31-member volunteer Board of Trustees is comprised of elected individuals representing viewers and educational and cultural institutions from communities all throughout WTVP's 22-county coverage area. The Board is charged with over-seeing the mission, vision and values of the station in programming, operations and long-range planning.
