Forever Plaid

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

“Happy Days” meets “The Full Monty” meets Tony Bennett in this delightful musical comedy revue that is one of Off-Broadway's most popular and critically-acclaimed musicals. Forever Plaid now celebrates its 20th anniversary with a new production for public television airing Monday, March 14 at 7 p.m. on 47.1.

The feel-good musical, starring several members of the original Off-Broadway cast, pays an affectionate homage to the clean-cut, close-harmony guy groups of the 1950s (e.g. The Four Aces and The Four Freshmen).

This madcap revue centers on a quartet of high-school chums (The Plaids) who see their earnest dreams of recording an album end tragically right before their first big gig. Their cherry-red ’54 Mercury convertible collides with a bus filled with Catholic schoolgirls on their way to see the Beatles' American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show.

The play begins with The Plaids — Jinx (Stan Chandler), Smudge (David Engel), Sparky (Larry Raben) and Francis (Daniel Reichard) — miraculously returning from the afterlife for one final, posthumous chance at musical glory. Broadway veteran David Hyde-Pierce (Frasier) guest-stars as the narrator.
