FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Funding for NPR
Monday, March 21st, 2011
WTVP is Central Illinois’ public television station. The two local public radio stations in our region are WCBU-FM and WGLT-FM. While we do not have common ownership or management, we do share a mission of public service to our viewers and listeners, and we all take that mission very seriously. The current political climate concerns all of us very deeply as it has the potential of totaling disrupting our ability to serve you. And you have the same concerns.
Many calls and questions about the federal situation came in over the last several days, specifically about how the Central Illinois Congressional delegation voted on the National Public Radio bill. In checking the roll call votes, Congressmen Schock, Schilling, Johnson, and Kinziger all voted with the majority for the elimination of funding. You can find the entire roll call vote for H.R. 1076 at
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2011/roll192.xml. Our sources in Washington tell us that while it is portrayed as a deficit-reduction measure, the legislation has been preliminarily scored by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office as saving not a single penny. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
Stay tuned.
Please call your representatives in Washington and ask them again to support public broadcasting:
