Silk - starring Maxine Peake and Rupert Penry-Jones as rival barristers

The brilliant, passionate defense barrister Martha Costello, who lives by the "innocent until proven guilty" credo in her defense of the poor and downtrodden, is in the competition of her life. She's applied to be appointed Queen's Counsel – one of the most prestigious accomplishments in an English lawyer's career – a process known as "taking Silk." To be unswervingly principled is difficult enough; but Martha's rival, charming and ruthless Clive Reader, is also in competition for QC. And only one of them will succeed. MASTERPIECE Mystery! - Silk premiers Sunday, August 25th and the series runs through Sunday, September 8th at 8:00pm on WTVP-HD 47.1.

In three episodes of six high-stakes cases, Maxine Peake (Little Dorrit) and Rupert Penry-Jones (Persuasion, The 39 Steps) star in Peter Moffat's riveting legal drama about the political and personal intrigues, and the hard cases, facing top barristers in the criminal law courtrooms and chambers of contemporary London.

Episode 1
Sunday, August 25th at 8:00pm

Barrister Martha Costello (Maxine Peak) is under pressure to win cases as she aspires to rise to the rank of Queen’s Counsel, also known as “taking Silk.” In an effort to boost her Silk application, Martha takes on challenging cases to prove her merit — and an ambitious student pupil (Tom Hughes). That Martha's opposing counsel in a major case is Clive (Rupert Penry-Jones), a rival barrister in her chambers, complicates matters further. Will Martha be able to satisfy both the personal and the professional demands placed on her?

Episode 2
Sunday, September 1st at 8:00pm

As Martha defends a vulnerable teenager, the pupils are given their first opportunity to stand up in court. In a separate case, she is forced to defend a police officer accused of racism at a police tribunal. As the pressure continues to mount for Martha and the pupils, Clive receives some astonishing news which could change not only his personal life, but life at chambers for everyone.

Episode 3
Sunday, September 8th at 8:00pm

Both Martha and Clive have their Silk interviews and Martha takes on the biggest case of her life: defending a repeat offender on a murder charge at the Old Bailey. When the case begins to fall apart, Martha struggles to remain focused as the stress on her personal life grows. All the while, the pupils' future and the fate of chambers hangs in the balance.
