NOVA visits the world's largest solar thermal plant at Kramer Junction in the Mojave Desert, which features a dazzling array of parabolic mirrors and powers some 150,000 Los Angeles-area homes. The mirrors focus the sun's rays on long tubes of oil, which conduct heat to boilers that in turn generate steam to drive massive turbines. Although Kramer Junction is highly efficient, there are good reasons why so few other plants like it are up and running; the mirrors take up a lot of land and transmission costs from remote desert locations are high. But, this too may be changing, at least in the Southwest, where NOVA viewers glimpse a solar plant that will soon help fuel the neon and glitz of Las Vegas. The solar situation is very different in Germany, which has become the world's leading developer of solar power despite an unpromising climate. The government's generous subsidies have encouraged everyone from city dwellers to pig farmers to consider putting up solar panels, while German engineering firms are now the leading manufacturers of silicon cells. Astonishingly, Germany is on track to produce 30 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. By contrast, the US gets only one percent of its energy from solar and wind power. However, Vijay Vaitheeswaran, energy correspondent for The Economist, is among the critics who fear that Germany's expensive program could be hard to sustain in the long term. Narrated by veteran newscaster Sander Vanocur, the special will be pledge tested on several public televisions in December 2002. Presley's story is told with vintage photos, interviews and video footage, including some never-before-available scenes of Elvis's impromptu offstage gospel performances. Many interviews reveal that Presley's unshakable commitment to gospel music was tested many times by producers and record label executives, who were later to be surprised when the Grammys overlooked Presley's No. 1 hits in favor of three of his best gospel performances.

In this thrilling 1983 concert, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield -- those seminal rock and rollers known to the world as The Righteous Brothers -- have reunited to bring back "blue-eyed soul" music. The concert was taped live at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles. This release highlights a number of their hits, including "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," "Unchained Melody" and "Ebb Tide." The performance marks the 21st anniversary of the Medley and Hatfield collaboration. The Righteous Brothers continued to tour the oldies circuit off and on during the 1980s and 1990s. The Righteous Brothers were the musical duo of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. They recorded from 1963 through 1975, and continued to perform until Hatfield's death in 2003. Their emotive vocal stylings were sometimes dubbed "blue-eyed soul." Medley and Hatfield both possessed exceptional vocal talent, with range, control and tone that helped them create a strong and distinct duet sound and also to perform as soloists. Medley sang the low parts with his deep, soulful bass-baritone, with Hatfield taking the higher register vocals with his soaring tenor. The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2003.

For 39 years, Washington Week has delivered the most interesting conversation of the week. Washington Week is the longest-running public affairs program on PBS. The show first aired locally on WETA on February 23, 1967. A few months later it began broadcasting over Eastern Educational Network, a group of 14 stations located between Washington, D.C. and Maine. In January 1969, it became the first local program to air on the new Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Washington Week features a group of journalists participating in roundtable discussion of major news events. In its early years, Washington Week maintained three regular correspondents — Peter Lisagor, Charlie Cordry, and Neil McNeil — but in 1970 the format changed to three regular reporters and a weekly guest reporter. The program currently maintains a small core group of regular correspondents and a larger group of occasional guests.

Good Evening Ev'rybody is a presentation of a never-before-released concert performance of Louis Armstrong (and other musical greats) at the 1970 Newport Jazz Festival in celebration of Armstrong's 70th birthday. Armstrong performs several of his greatest hits throughout the concert and rehearsals, including "Pennies From Heaven," "Blueberry Hill," "Wonderful World," "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife." In addition to the solo performances, special guest artists -- which include Dizzy Gillespie, Mahalia Jackson, Jimmy Owens, Bobby Hackett, Wild Bill Davison, Dave McKenna, the Preservation Hall Band and more -- perform some of Armstrong's hits such as "Thanks a Million," "I'm Confessin' That I Love You," "The Heebie Jeebies" and "Ain't Misbehavin'." Louis Armstrong passed away on July 7, 1971, and this is believed to be his last filmed performance.
