The Arts

Great Performances

Great Performances, the longest-running performing arts anthology on television, launches its fall season with a celebration of the late opera great Luciano Pavarotti in “Pavarotti: A Life in Seven Arias” Sunday, Sept. 14 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Spotlighting Pavarotti’s vocal talent and extraordinary international impact, this new performance documentary looks back over his legendary career, from his humble origins in Modena, Italy, to his London debut in La Boheme, his triumph in La fille du regiment, and his iconic rendition of “Nessun Dorma.”

The series then returns to Carnegie Hall for opening night—and a special tribute to Leonard Bernstein by the San Francisco Symphony under the baton Michael on Thomas, joined by soprano Dawn Upshaw, baritone Thomas Hampson and cellist Yo-Yo Ma—on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 8-10 p.m.

Then Great Performances brings us the best seat in the house for “Dance in America: The Nutcracker from San Francisco Ballet” on Wednesday, Dec. 17 from 7-9 p.m.

Live from Lincoln Center

Making the world’s greatest artists accessible to home viewers in virtually every corner of the United States, Live from Lincoln Center launches the fall season with “New York Philharmonic Opening Night Gala With Sir James Galway” on Wednesday, Sept. 17 from 7-8:30 p.m.

“Violinist Gil Shaham With the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra” will be featured on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 7-8:30 p.m. and “New York Philharmonic: New Year’s Eve Gala With Tenor Rolando Villazon” on Wednesday, Dec. 31 from 7-9 p.m.
