Countdown to DTV

PBS Kids

New friends, new adventures, and new learning opportunities await Central Illinois young people this fall!

Martha Speaks and Sid the Science Kid —two new series featuring stories, science, and lots of fun—join the weekday lineup on Labor Day. WordGirl, starring a caped crusader and definition dynamo, now delivers an ultimate mix of dazzling crime-fighting and extreme dictionary skills Mondays-Fridays at 3:30 p.m.

And in addition, many of your favorite shows have changed to more convenient times—and have added brand new adventures! In fact, PBS will roll out more than 150 new episodes of our current series over the next year!

Martha Speaks, a new series designed to celebrate the power of words, features the humorous adventures of a lovable family dog who acquires the ability to speak when she eats alphabet soup—and the letters travel to her brain. Based on the acclaimed books by Susan Meddaugh, the series builds awareness of the key role that vocabulary development plays in future reading and school success. Designed for 4- to 7-year-olds, the series will be featured weekdays at 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and Sundays at 9 a.m.

Sid The Science Kid uses comedy and music to encourage young people to explore the foundations of science in their everyday world. The inquisitive preschooler Sid explores a new topic each day and finds the answers to his questions in familiar places—at home with his parents, with his teachers and friends at school, and in the car with Grandma. Through their adventures, Sid and his friends introduce children to scientific themes like measurements, change, the five senses, simple machines, and health. Designed for 3- to 6-year-olds, the series will be featured weekdays and weekends at 7:30 a.m. beginning Sept. 1.

WordGirl chronicles the adventures of a mild-mannered fifth grader who, at the call of duty, transforms into WordGirl. When there is trouble in the big city, this super heroine-in-disguise uses vocabulary to defeat outlaws bent on “WORD” domination. Aimed at 6- to 8-year-olds, WordGirl will feature both new and encore programs weekdays at 3:30 p.m. and Sundays at 10 a.m. throughout the fall.

Super Why! continues to help young viewers learn key reading skills by transporting them into Storybook Village, a tiny world that exists behind the books in a library. Each weekday at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m., the children meet fairytale friends who transform into reading-powered superheroes and jump into books (literally) to find answers to everyday preschool challenges. They embark on exciting adventures, where they play interactive reading games to overcome obstacles and save the day. Super Why! will feature new programs Sept. 1-4 and Oct. 13-15 as well as encores of last year’s shows.

WordWorld continues to unfold in a wonderful place where letters become words and words become WordFriends—wacky characters that look like and spell exactly what they are. Words come alive, words save the day, words become a child’s best friend—and words truly are the stars of the show—each weekday at 10:30 a.m. This fall, WordWorld will launch two new seasonal shows: “A Kooky Spooky Halloween/Sheep’s Halloween Costume” on Oct. 6 and 31 and “The Christmas Star/A Christmas Present for Dog” on Dec. 1 and 25.

Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman —part game show, part reality TV, and part spoof—will launch its third season on Monday, Sept. 29 at 4 p

Curious George, the top show among kids 2-5 nationwide, will roll out its third season with new programs Sept. 1-4. Airing weekdays and weekends at 7 a.m., the series stars an inquisitive little monkey with a taste for adventure—and introduces science, math, and even engineering to preschoolers.

Between the Lions —an Emmy Award-winning series designed to make learning to read an entertaining adventure—will launch its eighth season in September. Airing weekdays at 5:30 a.m., the series will present new programs each Monday beginning Sept. 15.

Arthur continues to chronicle the adventures of the world’s most famous aardvark. Airing weekdays at 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Sundays at 9:30 a.m., the series will premiere new shows each Monday beginning Oct. 6.

Sesame Street, which moves to weekdays at 9 a.m., launched its 39th season in August and will continue to feature new programs into the fall.
