A big toothy-grinned congratulations to our very own Joey McNally, local first-grade winner in the 2005 WTVP/READING RAINBOW Young Writers & Illustrators Contest! … Joey's story, The Tooth Puller, has just won second place in the first grade division of the national competition!

After winning the local competition, Joey's book (all about the ingenious plans a boy and his pet monkey, Moopis, mastermind to dislodge a loose tooth) was sent on for national judging by READING RAINBOW's expert panel of judges. The competition was steep (108 other PBS stations also sent their winners, which had been chosen from a total of 40,000 entries!), but Joey climbed to the top and The Tooth Puller comes home with Second Place honors at the First Grade level.

It also comes home with special prizes from READING RAINBOW -- DVDs and books from the READING RAINBOW library – and will be featured online at pbskids.org in August.

WTVP is totally thrilled for Joey, a student at St. Mary’s School in Kickapoo, but we can't say that we're surprised. The Tooth Puller impressed all our judges and staff members with its wit, humor and incredible illustrations. We can't wait to see what Joey has in store for us in the future!

Speaking of which, read The Tooth Puller -- and all our other fabulous local winning stories -- right here in the Reading Rainbow Room.

Congratulations Joey!
