The Power of Movement

I first learned about the new documentary “Great Migrations: A People on the Move” last May when I attended the PBS Annual Conference. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. himself, was on hand to talk through the significance of this 4-hour series. Immediately, my mind was captivated. I had never heard this slice of American history packaged this way. And this is a story that every American needs to hear…It is powerful, captivating, sobering, emboldening and profoundly frames how the Black experience in America forever touched and influenced all of culture and society.

Not only does the documentary dive into the mass movement of Black Americans fleeing Jim Crow South to make a better life for themselves in the North, but it also follows the more recent reverse migration of many Black Americans back to the South – driven by economic change and an ongoing struggle for freedom and opportunity.

As one woman in the documentary notes, “Movement is really a concrete way of measuring your freedom. Realizing that I can make a choice to pick up and start all over again, elsewhere. If that is not the most transformative decision you can make – I don’t know what is.”

I invite you to take time this month to be inspired and join us for this ground-breaking documentary!

Thank you for watching WTVP PBS,

JENN
