MAINE AT GETTYSBURG

Fifteen units of Maine soldiers — infantry, artillery and cavalry, were all part of the Union army at Gettysburg. Their contributions were heroic and vital. What they did when called upon helped determine the battle and, ultimately, the Civil War.

Explore the enduring legacy of one of the most significant African American leaders of the Reconstruction era. Born in 1852 in Eastern North Carolina to a family of turpentine farmers, White rose through the ranks of state politics to serve in the 55th US Congress from 1887 to 1901 as its sole Black voice.

Through dramatic re-enactments and interviews with historians, the documentary Lew Wallace: Shiloh Soldier, Ben-Hur Bard chronicles General Lewis “Lew” Wallace’s extraordinary life and career. Wallace played a leading role in America’s military, political, diplomatic and literary affairs during the 19th century. 

He was inspired to write the historical adventure Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, one of the best-selling novels of the century, after meeting with famous Peorian Robert Ingersoll.

THE BLENNERHASSETTS AND AARON BURR

Treason Island is the story of Anglo-Irish immigrants Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett and their involvement with America’s fallen founder, Aaron Burr. Blennerhassett, who fl ed Ireland due to social scandal and his involvement with the Irish Revolution, settled on the edge of civilization in the Ohio River Valley in 1798. The island on which he attempted to create his paradise sits near Marietta, Ohio, which was at that time the gateway to the Northwest Territory, and now carries his name.
