More than two-thirds of the world's plant species are crammed together in tropical rainforests. The result is astonishing beauty and intense competition. New filming techniques take us into a magical world that operates on a different timescale.
Water plants create some of the most beautiful, bizarre and important habitats on earth. Some use a kind of superglue to hold on in torrents, some are armed with vicious weapons to fight for space. Others form spheres and escape from animal enemies by rolling. In one river in Brazil, the water bubbles like champagne as plants create our atmosphere.
Between the tropics and the frozen poles lies a region dominated by relentless change in the form of the four seasons. Each season presents plants with huge challenges, from ice and snow to raging fires; from intense competition to surprising enemies. To survive here plants must use strategy, deception and remarkable feats of engineering.
Deserts are hostile to life. Temperatures soar and plummet and water is rare. Desert plants can spend decades in suspended animation waiting for rain, or they travel to find it. They survive using weapons, camouflage and surprising alliances with animals.
