THE PLANETS: ICE WORLDS
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2, 9 PM

Over a billion miles from the sun, the ice words — Uranus and Neptune — lie beyond the rocky inner planets and the gas giants. NOVA takes you inside the missions that rewrote the story of the outer solar system: NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2 capture Neptune’s supersonic winds and rings around a tipped-over Uranus. And when New Horizons flew by Pluto in 2015, it revealed jagged ice mountains and an underground ocean.

Bats have been implicated in deadly epidemics such as COVID-19 and Ebola, yet scientists are discovering evidence that they may hold the key to a longer and healthier life. From caves in Thailand and Texas to labs around the globe, NOVA meets the scientists who are decoding the superpowers of the bat.

ARCTIC GHOST SHIP
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 7 PM

NOVA presents an exclusive breakthrough in the greatest mystery in Arctic exploration. In 1845, British explorer Sir John Franklin set off to chart the elusive Northwest Passage, commanding 128 men in two robust and well-stocked Royal Navy ships, the Erebus and Terror. They were never heard from again.

SUNKEN SHIP RESCUE
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 8 PM

NOVA follows the epic operation to secure, raise and salvage the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which ran aground and tragically capsized off the coast of Italy on January 13, 2012, killing 32 passengers. Moving the ship - which stretches the length of three football fields, weighs over 114,000 tons and lies half submerged on the site of a protected reef with a 50-meter long hole in its hull - from its precarious perch on the edge of a 60 meter high underwater cliff will be a huge technical and logistical challenge. Now, NOVA joins a team of more than 500 divers and engineers working around the clock as they attempt the biggest ship recovery project in history.
