In February, WTVP offers something for every viewer, from the revealing documentaries of Independent Lens, to explorations of ancient farming and electric vehicles, contemporary African American literature, hidden treasures of Saudi Arabia, Renaissance art, and a look at the challenges and rewards of a central Illinois farm family.

LOVE IN THE TIME OF FENTANYL

As deaths in Vancouver, Canada, reach an all-time high, the Overdose Prevention Society opens its doors — a renegade supervised drug consumption site that employs active and former drug users. Its staff and volunteers do whatever it takes to save lives and give hope to a marginalized community in this intimate documentary that looks beyond the stigma of people who use fentanyl and other drugs.

The My World Too crew visits a farmer in Kansas who is trying to save the crops his indigenous ancestors grew. Then, we meet Bill Moore in Omaha, Nebraska, to discuss the electric vehicle revolution. We learn about electric bikes at Day 6 Bikes.

Farmers throughout Illinois go to great lengths to preserve our soil and protect water quality. In the Illinois Farm Bureau’s first documentary, Sustaining Our Future: A Farm Family Story, watch how three generations of farmers approach sustainability. Follow the Ganschow family in Bureau County to highlight the farmer spirit and collaboration required to achieve the goals of the Nutrient Loss Reduction strategy.

MEDICI: THE ART OF POWER

Patrons of the arts and rulers of Florence for generations, the Medici family made a lasting impact on the culture of Renaissance Italy. Not only were the Medici bankers to some of Europe’s most important rulers, but they were also great patrons of the arts. Artists such as Donatello, Brunelleschi, Botticelli and Michelangelo all developed under and enjoyed Medici largesse. This documentary explores how the art of the Renaissance had become the visual geopolitical language of the Medici — a language of power.

87TH ANNUAL ANISFIELD-WOLF BOOK AWARDS

The 2022 Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards honor the work of Percival Everett, Donika Kelly, George Makari, Tiya Miles and Lifetime Achievement Award winner Ishmael Reed. The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards is the only national juried prize recognizing literature that has contributed to our understanding of racism and human diversity. Hosted by acclaimed scholar Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
