WTVP PBS Reaches $1 Million “We Believe in WTVP” Goal

In July 2025, WTVP PBS launched the “We Believe in WTVP” campaign in response to the historic cut in federal funding for public media. The campaign sought to raise $1 million through a $500,000 matching grant and new or additional gifts. Through the generosity of members and viewers across central Illinois, WTVP has met its goal!

On July 17, 2025, Congress passed the HR 4 Recissions Act which, among other things, clawed back previously approved funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Historically, 30% of WTVP’s budget has come from the CPB, about $1 million per year. In a letter to members, WTVP CEO Jenn Gordon wrote, “At WTVP we are not afraid of entering these new waters because WE BELIEVE that what we provide for the community is essential. WTVP provides a safe and compelling space that turns ‘screen time’ into a place where families can connect, where individuals can learn and everyone in our community can stay engaged with what’s going on right here in central Illinois.”

The community’s response was swift and generous, with notes of support pouring in with additional or new gifts. In an email, Matt Mischler of Germantown Hills wrote, “Now more than ever you are a lifeline for so many people. I am a very proud member and I intend to be a very proud supporter for many years to come. I am excited to see the community rally around WTVP; it is irreplaceable in the community.” Matt was not alone as 1500 new donors joined WTVP during the campaign.

“This is the first critical step in ensuring the station’s future,” says Gordon. “Our community met us here and we are so grateful to them. From here, we can continue to build and grow, providing central Illinois with more of the programs they love and more local content to keep them connected.” Audrey Kamm, WTVP’s Chief Development Officer, envisions great things for the year to come. “As we look to the new year, we’re excited to keep this momentum going and build an even stronger WTVP for the future—with the community by our side.”
