Michelle Hayes | Morton, Illinois
Director of Foster Care, Children’s Home Association of Illinois

Known for her energy, relentless positivity, and a “quirky” sense of humor, Michelle Hayes has worked at the Children’s Home Association of Illinois (CHAIL) for over 11 years. She is driven by a deep commitment to secure permanency for Youth in Care and a desire to foster a culture of care where employees feel empowered and valued. “I care deeply about people and always put others’ needs above my own which drives both my professional and personal life.” Katie Cox of CHAIL agrees, saying of Michelle, “She knows the most powerful force in our community is compounding kindness and generosity: small acts of kindness that make long-lasting impacts on vulnerable populations who have all but given up hope.”

Outside of work and fundraising, Hayes is married to her husband of over five years and enjoys sharing life with her stepdaughter. She also loves her two adorable dogs, Fay and Roger. Hayes adds, “As an animal lover, fundraiser, and leader, my life revolves around the values of care, compassion, and connection...Through my work at CHAIL and my advocacy at nonprofits like St. Jude, I hope to inspire others and create lasting change for the better.”
Hayes’ passion for philanthropy began early, but getting diagnosed with childhood cancer at the age of 16 “changed everything.” She remembers that fighting cancer took “a significant emotional and physical toll” on her mind and body. “The experience reshaped my perspective, deepened my resilience, and ignited a lifelong commitment to giving back.” Hayes credits unwavering support from family and St. Jude Children’s hospital with the key role in saving her life. This year, she celebrates 20 years cancer free! This survivor not only keeps a special place for St. Jude in her heart, she has also raised thousands of dollars to support the continuation of their life-saving work.
Words of Wisdom:
“Don’t take life so seriously. Embrace the joy of playing, laughing, and having fun …It’s those authentic lighthearted moments that will keep you grounded and bring the most happiness to your journey.”
At CHAIL and in fundraising, Hayes thrives on building connections and inspiring collaboration. Fueled by curiosity and the drive of an overachiever, Hayes earned both undergraduate and master’s degrees in Family and Consumer Sciences from Eastern Illinois University and recently completed a second master’s degree in Nonprofit Leadership from Bradley University. Hayes defines a good leader as “someone who inspires trust and fosters a sense of collaboration…” and who has “…the vision to see the bigger picture and the ability to guide others toward it while staying grounded in the values that make a community or organization thrive.”
A Love for Central Illinois:
“It’s truly heartwarming to see individuals consistently supporting a multitude of organizations and showing up for one another…the people of central Illinois embody what it means to care for their neighbors. This strong, shared sense of purpose is what makes this region so special.”
