Owner | Serendipity Mercantile

Laura Burke is a woman of vision and big ideas. She is the Owner and Founder of Serendipity Mercantile, a store that blends retail and philanthropy. Since its opening in 2022, the nonprofit has distributed nearly $60,000 to more than 30 local organizations and businesses. “She founded the store with a mission to uplift others,” writes Michelle Wolf, “providing small business owners and local makers an affordable opportunity to sell their products in a brick-and-mortar setting that might otherwise be out of reach." The store also sells gently used items, promoting sustainability and mindful consumption.
“Over the past ten years, I have often found myself in roles for which I did not have formal training or feel qualified for. While challenging, these experiences taught me how to pivot quickly, embrace continuous learning and grow confidently in my leadership abilities.”
Beyond financial contributions, Laura envisions Serendipity Mercantile serving as a place of encouragement and refuge for local patrons. This commitment to fostering community has helped build strong relationships with partners, customers and residents alike. Michelle explains that “Many community members who first visited the store as shoppers have since become dedicated weekly volunteers, a testament to the contagious passion and purpose Laura brings to her work every day.”
Laura’s big ideas have led her down many different paths, including education, ministry and entrepreneurship. “Each role I have held has provided valuable opportunities for learning and growth.”
Laura also invests in the next generation, serving at Encounter Campus Ministries, a place that deeply impacted her as a college student at Illinois State University. She mentors several young women, meeting regularly to discuss life and offer guidance. “There is significant pressure on young adults to define the trajectory of their lives and determine how best to apply their gifts and skills. Many of the most meaningful opportunities arise not from careful planning alone, but through doors opened and guidance provided by the Lord.”

When she’s not at Serendipity Mercantile, Laura and her husband Nick can often be found at their favorite coffee shop, CxT Roasting Company. “If you know me, you know I absolutely adore coffee... Anytime we are in the area you will find us there with a great book and an excellent cup of joe!" The couple also enjoys traveling and exploring together.
“It is important to recognize that you do not need to have everything figured out. Enjoy every step. It's not always about what is next, but to savor where you are at currently.”
