Alex Carmona | Peoria, IL
Artist & Owner | Old School Alex

A world-renowned artist, Alex Carmona is deeply committed to the city he now calls home. As owner of Old School Alex, a business he launched while serving in the military, he works as a master relief printmaker and fine woodworker. He has created art for iconic names in the automotive and music industries and his pieces were among the first publicly displayed art in Saudi Arabia. Afterwards, Fender Musical Instrument Corporation commissioned him to create the world’s first “Woodcut Telecaster.”
Since moving from Colorado in 2019, Alex has invested deeply in his new community. He was recently elected as 2nd District Council Member for the City of Peoria. Kathleen Ma, one of Alex’s neighbors, notes that "Alex has quickly become a driving force in the community. He is proof that when civic leadership meets artistic vision, extraordinary things happen.” Even though it means sacrificing time with family and in the studio, Alex considers it worthwhile. “I felt compelled to run for city council as a sense of duty to help contribute a positive change in the city that my family and I love.”
Alex was raised by his grandparents who immigrated to the US from Mexico and is grateful for his grandfather’s leadership. “He is a man who came from nothing and did everything in his power to give his family a better life. Eustolio Carmona is by far the most influential person in my life.”

As a child, Alex spent most of his free time building model cars and creating illustrations. “I always knew that I wanted a career where I could create something out of nothing.” As he grew older, he pursued “more responsible adult career paths,” thinking that his art was just meant to be a hobby. Looking back, he realizes “The fear of the unknown is what kept me from taking the necessary steps at an earlier age to relentlessly pursue my goals.”
“My arms are open to good people. We all help each other be better and we all have a positive outlook on life. Family is everything.”

Alex believes strongly in the importance of standing up for children. His wife Chelsea volunteers with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) which ensures that children navigating the court system have a consistent, trusted adult focused on their best interests. Alex was so motivated by the impact of this program that he is pursuing certification as a volunteer as well.
Besides being an inspiration, Alex describes his wife Chelsea as his “partner in crime” and top supporter. Together, they have three kids; Alessandra, Felix and Carmela. “My wife and children are my core.”
Alex’s favorite place to be is his front porch, surrounded by family and friends. “When we moved to Peoria six years ago, I had no idea we picked the best street to live on. Moss Avenue is my favorite hang out spot and it has little to do with the beauty or historical significance. It's because of the people.”
