An Italian opera company restages an oratorio last performed in 1826. Organized by Mozart’s librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, the 1826 event changed America’s cultural landscape with the introduction of Italian opera to New York City.

Great Performances celebrates the opening night of San Francisco Symphony’s 109th season as it welcomes its new music director, Grammy-winning conductor-composer Esa-Pekka Salonen, to the stage as conductor for his first opening night concert. The concert features performances of John Adams’ Slonimsky’s Earbox, Alberto Ginastera’s Estancia Suite and excerpts from Iphigenia, a new opera by multiple Grammy Award winners.

This episode was filmed at the historic Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown, Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C., under strict COVID-19 mitigation procedures. Hosted by and starring Tony and Grammy Award winner Jessie Mueller, Broadway features Amber Iman (Hamilton); Luke Hawkins (tap- sensation in Harry Connick, Jr. – A Celebration of Cole Porter); Alexis Michelle (RuPaul’s Drag Race); Sam Simahk (My Fair Lady, Carousel, The King and I, Miss Saigon); and celebrated pianists Steven Mann and Ray Wong. All performers are joined by The American Pops Orchestra under the baton of founder and music director Maestro Luke Frazier.

New York City Ballet’s classic staging of Coppélia was created by Balanchine and Alexandra Danilova in 1974. Considered one of the greatest comic ballets of the 19th century, it is the tale of a budding romance between two villagers and the curious workings of their neighbor: the mad inventor Dr. Coppélius.
